Letter to somebody that is worried about the future

by - September 21, 2019

Dear reader,

I think we have all been in a position where we have worried about the future. Worried about what is in store for us, or about not having things figured out.

As much as it is scary, we cannot control the future.  There are things you can do to facilitate your near future, but there is no way of absolutely controlling and predicting everything that will happen. Although nervewracking sometimes, things have a way of working out and there are more paths and opportunities than it may seem at the moment in store. Take steps to try and improve your immediate future and allow the rest will fall into place. Most of the time, it will not look like what you thought, but everything happens for a reason - sometimes you just can't see it in the moment.

One of the things that worried me the most about the future was choosing to do something, realising it was the complete wrong option for me and not being able to go back on it. Maybe you're a little anxious about that too. However, I have come to realise that there really are so many options and that by choosing one door you aren't necessarily closing others. Very few choices in life will be ones that you cannot ever change - it will just be a case of following a different less conventional path. It is never too late to try something new or go down a different path and what you choose will provide you with experience of some sort, which is always valuable. Even if it all goes wrong, there will likely be another way of getting to where you want to be, even if it is a longer route. There are many ways of getting to the same place.

Not knowing what will happen can be worrying.  However, we often fail to realise that in the same way we do not know what things may go wrong, we also do not know all the things that will go well.  It is impossible to see what opportunities and future options you will have presented. You are worrying about the future forgetting that you will also have different options to the ones you have now. There will be things available in the future that are not available to you now. These things will allow you to choose. They will allow you to realise what is right for you.

It is normal to sometimes worry about what will happen in the future. But remember, the amazing thing about the future is that whilst you can't control it, you can still change it (or at least aspects of it). Not knowing what will happen opens up so much room for experimentation and shaping things to be more like how you want them to be.
