Getting yourself out of the blues

We all have those moments. Sometimes we just feel down and we can't explain it. We have an empty feeling we just can't shake off or seem to feel miserable for no particular reason. It happens to the best of us. Below are some things that have helped me when I'm feeling down.

1) Writing a letter to yourself - this might sound strange, but often you are harsher with yourself than you would be to a friend or loved one. For me, thinking about what I would say to myself if I was a friend has really helped. No one can quite understand your situation like yourself and sometimes you need to hear some of the advice you'd give someone else. I sometimes find this helps me to detach myself a little from feeling down and try and come at it from a different perspective.

2) This is a little similar to above, but writing your thoughts out on paper. Keeping a diary has always helped me and just allowed me to put more perspective into the way I feel. You can read more about my experience and why I find it so helpful here.

2) Music - I have an uplifting playlist on Spotify of songs that make me want to dance and feel happy. If I feel a little down, this usually helps. Create a list of songs that you love and bring you joy. Just plugging in headphones and going out for a walk in the fresh air can make such a huge difference.

3) Change your environment - sometimes the change in environment is enough to get me to stop feeling so down. Feeling down can at times be linked with the environment you are currently in. A change of space can wake you up and motivate you.

4) If you can't work out why you feel so unexplainable miserable don't beat yourself up about it. It is okay and happens to the best of us. Mental health doesn't always have a logical explanation. It does its own thing. Do something, particularly something you love to get your mind off it- whether that be talking to a friend, playing a musical instrument, reading. Starting an activity can be enough to get you to stop concentrating on the feeling and make you feel happier.

5) Remind yourself that you are amazing and that you can do anything you set your mind to. If you find you can't, talk about it - there will always be someone willing to listen that you can share your feelings with. They say a problem shared is a problem halved- even if it feels like your problem may have no solution, talking it through with someone and knowing someone else knows can be enough to make you feel less alone. Sometimes having someone listen is all we need to feel better.

6) You are never ever alone. There will be someone that is willing to listen to your struggles. It can be easy to isolate yourself when you feel down and feel lonely. I know it can be difficult to reach out to someone. But, trust me if you reach out to people someone will care and be there to support you - most people will not notice you may feel down unless you state it. There are people that care

If you feel down for a prolonged period of time, please ask for help- you don't have to struggle alone. There is nothing shameful about admitting you need support - we all need support at points - no one would be where they are now without the help of others.

  1. Music usually works the best. A close second would be getting out of the space that currently holds the negative energy.
