Why it is OK to spend time by yourself

I would say I am a people person and I do love spending time with my friends and family. However, one of the areas I think I have most grown and definitely grown partly in this year is enjoying my own company and being okay with being by myself. I don’t need to be surrounded by somebody every second of the day.

I think as a society there can be a pressure to always be surrounded by people or socialising, out all nights etc. But there are sometimes that for whatever reason you find yourself at home or by yourself. I have grown much more comfortable with that and learnt to embrace it.

One of the key reasons helping me embrace that alone time is the fact that there will be other moments where you will socialise- other events, parties etc. Just because you don’t go out this time doesn’t mean anything. There are hundreds of other events out there for you to attend and you don’t have to go to every single one.

You don’t need to be with other people in order to have fun. You can enjoy your own company and there are various ways of doing this. First of all by doing things you love (your hobbies), listening to your favourite tunes, reading a book you’ve been meaning to read, doing your skincare routine, having a little pamper session etc. I used to associate being by myself when I knew others were out as being something negative and being lonely. But it doesn’t need to be like that. You will socialise and go out at different points and it is okay not to be out when everyone else seems to be out.

It is important to spend some time alone (though not too much, seeing others and connecting with people is important too) to collect your thoughts. Spending some time by yourself can really allow you to work out how you feel. It allows you to check up on yourself.

It took me a while to really appreciate having some time to spend by myself. Now I have become much more comfortable in moments where I happen to be alone distinguishing and really setting it apart from the feeling of loneliness because it doesn’t have to be that way. You can do things that make you feel good and be your own pick me up.

  1. I absolutely agree. I’ve come to love the times where I have the house to myself. I can watch that film mike doesn’t like, or I can do my nails and a mask in peace.

    In fact, I think it’s very healthy to be comfortable in your own company!

    1. Yes, that's the spirit! Took me a while to come to a point where I was comfortable with it, but I enjoy my own company a lot more now and it is such a nice feeling. You are so right, it is healthy to enjoy your own company (a little self love is important).💛

  2. I totally agree. I have learned that being alone is healthy for me. However, the alone part that I still struggle with is going on in public alone. For example, going to the movies or going to eat. I still find it really hard to be able to do those activities by myself.

    1. Baby steps - the more you do it the more comfortable you'll be with it. I still haven't ever been to the cinema to watch something alone so that is something I could try. As for eating alone, I can definitely relate to not really enjoying that so much as that was me at the beginning. However, now I feel much more comfortable with going to eat by myself, just because I have done it a fair few times. Thinking of it as a little treat for yourself can help- eating by yourself at the end of the day means you can go wherever you want as you don't have to accommodate for others and you can eat whenever you want.
